President Cyril Ramaphosa has committed that more resources will be allocated to the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) during the coming mid-term budget.

Ramaphosa announced a national strategy to address the scourge.

One of the criticisms of the government’s classification of GBV in November last year is that it did not unlock any new funds to fight the scourge; instead, all government departments were expected to reprioritise their budgets and make allocations towards GBV.

But in his address on Tuesday night, Ramaphosa instructed departments to present a funded implementation plan to reduce forensic backlogs.

He also committed to making more funds available.

Resources have been allocated to strengthen the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences units.
