Ramaphosa addresses fear over 9 female bodies found in Ekurhuleni at ANC rally
President Cyril Ramaphosa has addressed the growing fear and public outcry following the discovery of nine female bodies in the Ekurhuleni municipality, east of Johannesburg. The President spoke at an ANC rally, acknowledging the deep anxiety within the community as authorities continue to investigate the string of murders.
The nation is angry. The women of South Africa are angry. Their anger is justified. I share that anger.
The discovery of the bodies, which occurred over a period of several weeks, has led to widespread speculation regarding the possibility of a serial killer operating in the region. Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that they are working to determine if the cases are linked.
We cannot continue picking up bodies.
During his address, President Ramaphosa emphasized that the government is treating these incidents with the utmost urgency. He assured the public that law enforcement agencies are dedicating significant resources to the investigation and that no stone will be left unturned in the pursuit of justice for the victims and their families.
The President also highlighted the broader issue of gender-based violence in South Africa, describing it as a national crisis that requires a collective response from both the government and society at large. He called for increased vigilance and community cooperation to help identify perpetrators and ensure the safety of women across the country.
