President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared that the abuse, rape, and killing of women are not part of South Africa’s heritage. Speaking during a national address, the President emphasized that such acts of violence contradict the values of the country and the freedom fought for by previous generations.

The abuse, rape, and killing of women is not our heritage. It is a stain on our national conscience and a betrayal of the values of our Constitution.

Ramaphosa called upon all citizens, particularly men, to take an active role in ending the scourge of gender-based violence. He stressed that the responsibility to create a safe society lies with everyone and that silence in the face of such violence is complicity.

We must confront the reality that our homes and communities are not safe for women. We must change the culture that allows this violence to persist.

The President concluded by reaffirming his government’s commitment to implementing stricter measures and ensuring that perpetrators of gender-based violence face the full might of the law.
