Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has made a special appeal to Egyptian football supporters ahead of South Africa’s crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Eritrea.

The South African coach has a strong connection with Egypt after spending two years in charge of Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he won two CAF Champions League titles.

Mosimane is now back in Egypt with Bafana as his side prepares for their second Group D qualifier, having started their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Guinea at home last Saturday.

Eritrea, meanwhile, held Kenya to a 1-1 draw in their opening qualifier, leaving them with one point ahead of their meeting with the 1996 AFCON winners.

With the match taking place in Cairo, Mosimane is hoping his relationship with Egyptian football can help create a familiar atmosphere for Bafana.

“The Egyptian nation has acknowledged Bafana Bafana from the history. Bafana Bafana has put good history in Egypt,” Mosimane said, per SAFA.

“They know the players, they saw them also in the World Cup. We are saying to the Egyptians, we are brothers.

“We might be fighting again in a few days to come, but now that we are here, we have got a very good history.”

Mosimane also pointed to the South African coaches who have made their mark in Egypt, including former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena.

“We have got even the coaches here. Coach [Rulani] Mokwena is here, I was here. We have a very good foundation with the Egyptian Federation,” he added.

“We hope that the Egyptians, the supporters, come to our match and support us. I’m saying to the Red Devils, the Red Devils must come to the match and support us and support me against Eritrea.

“Alaoui, I’m expecting you to come and support. Obviously, Zamalekians also, they are good. They will come and support us. We need everybody to support us. They know us, we are brothers.”

Bafana face Eritrea at the Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo on Wednesday, 30 September, with South Africa looking to build on their opening victory and strengthen their position in Group D.
