Brazilian striker Alvaro de Oliveira offered to Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates are understood to be among the Betway Premiership clubs that have been approached regarding the availability of Brazilian striker Alvaro de Oliveira, although no formal approach has been made to the Buccaneers at this stage.

As reported by the Siya crew, De Oliveira is currently a free agent after recently parting ways with Al Bataeh Club in the United Arab Emirates, with his representatives exploring opportunities in South Africa and North Africa.

The 25-year-old forward has subsequently been sounded out to a few clubs in the Betway Premiership, with Pirates understood to be among those considered by the player’s representatives.

However, the approach to the Soweto giants has not reached the level of a formal proposal to the club’s senior management.

Instead, the approach has been indirect. A source with knowledge of the situation explained the thinking behind the approach.

“Pirates are one of the clubs that were approached, but there was no formal approach made to the club. It was more through people and scouts close to or working with the club to try and see if there could be interest and whether it could then be taken further to the higher management,” the source told the Siya crew.

The source also revealed that the player’s representatives believed Pirates could potentially be a suitable destination following the club’s recent acquisition of Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen.

“The South African representatives and their counterparts overseas were motivated by the fact that Pirates recently signed Sebastian Pedersen. They felt that if Pirates were looking at that type of profile, they could also be interested in a player of Alvaro’s calibre,” the source added.

Pedersen, who arrived at Pirates during the current transfer window, has yet to make his competitive debut for the club, but his arrival has nevertheless provided an indication of the type of attacking profile the Buccaneers have been willing to consider.

De Oliveira’s representatives are therefore understood to have viewed Pirates as a potentially attractive option, although there is currently no indication that the club has made a move for the Brazilian.

De Oliveira is also understood to hold an Arab-country passport in addition to his Brazilian nationality, which could potentially be a consideration for clubs assessing his availability.
