Leaders of the major political parties vying for control of the City of Johannesburg clashed on Wednesday night over the future of coalition governance and the persistent issue of corruption in the metro.

The debate, which highlighted the deep divisions ahead of the upcoming local government elections, saw representatives from the ANC, DA, EFF, IFP, and ActionSA trade barbs over who is best equipped to rescue the city from its current state of decline.

The current model of coalition governance has failed the residents of Johannesburg, leading to instability and a complete breakdown in service delivery.

The DA representative argued that the city requires a stable, single-party mandate to effectively tackle the infrastructure crisis, while the ANC maintained that its focus remains on reclaiming the city to restore order and service delivery. ActionSA’s candidate emphasized the need for a clean break from the past, citing the party’s commitment to fighting corruption as the cornerstone of its campaign.

The EFF took a more radical stance, calling for a complete overhaul of the city’s administrative structures, while the IFP stressed the importance of collaborative governance that prioritizes the needs of the poor over political point-scoring.

As the election date approaches, the debate underscored the high stakes for Johannesburg, with all parties acknowledging that the city’s economic future depends on the outcome of the vote.
