Orlando Pirates managed to draw 0-0 with La Cure Waves in the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round on Sunday afternoon.
Buccaneers coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made a big call in the defence as he handed a first-team debut to Cristian Derbyshire, who was part of the squad for the pre-season in Spain in July, while Boitumelo Radiopane led the attack once again.
The Soweto giants were involved in midweek as they put Kruger United to the sword on Tuesday, so it was no surprise to see Ouaddou make a handful of changes, although it may have disrupted the way they played.
Radiopane looked to continue from where he left off on Tuesday evening as he registered the Buccaneers’ first big effort on target when he forced Waves goalkeeper Jean Ramdiane into save after 15 minutes.
That unfortunately proved to be the Soweto giants’ only threating effort at the Waves goal for the remainder of the opening 45 minutes, while Sipho Chaine did not have a big save to make between the sticks for the visitors.
The Buccaneers continued in similar fashion to the first, as they pushed to find a way past the stubborn Waves defence but the final ball was not up to par.
In an attempt to find the breakthrough, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made a double change after the hour mark as Radiopane and Msendami’s afternoon came to an end, with Yanela Mbuthuma and crowd favourite Kabelo Kgositsile being introduced to freshen up the attack.
The Buccaneers were able to carve out another opening in the closing stages of the contest when Mbuthuma getting on the end of a corner, however the striker sent his headed effort wide of the upright.
That proved to be the final opening of the contest, as Waves were able to hold out until the final whistle to deny Pirates an away goal while leaving tie level pegging at 0-0 ahead of next week’s second leg.
