Relebohile Mofokeng has been tipped for another European move that could be in the range of just over €20 million (around R369 million), should he continue his impressive displays for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Since making his move to Belgium from Orlando Pirates, the South African has made a blistering start to life in Europe, already collecting silverware and recording three goals — including one against FC Viktoria Plzen in the UEFA Europa League.

This has led to reported interest from European giants like Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Serie A outfit Napoli.

Now, according to Grant Veitch, Director of Africa Recruitment at Roc Nation, who cited colleagues in Belgium, the former Buccaneer could command a resounding transfer fee if he continues in the same vein.

Speaking at a round table discussion in Cape Town on Tuesday, Veitch revealed that the Belgian market is already buzzing about the 21-year-old’s potential.

“Rele has started exceptionally well, and our Belgian consultants are telling us that if he continues this way, he will move for 20 to 25 million euros,” he said.

During a discussion on player pathways and exporting local talent to international leagues, Roc Nation’s head of football on the African continent highlighted the rising wave of young stars making an impact abroad.

“If you look at Mofokeng then maybe the move is going to Europe, and if you look at the exciting thing about South African football now, there’s a lot of young players that are doing exceptionally well in Europe and other markets,” he noted.

Referencing Mofokeng, Olwethu Makhanya and Chicago Fire’s Mbekezeli Mbokazi, the recruitment chief highlighted how this batch of talent are opening doors for even younger players navigating their way through the early stages of their professional football careers.

“Now South Africans are building a bit of a reputation for actually having good players in those leagues, so it makes the other South African players that are aspiring to get there a lot easier because the clubs now trust South African players, that they can make a difference.”
