As a result of Bafana Bafana’s improved performances, South African footballers are not only earning moves abroad again to high-profile leagues but sooner rather than later, we could be seeing them returning to Europe’s top five leagues in numbers. Here is a look at three footballers lined up for bigger moves.
New Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has inherited a squad brimming with talent, with most of the younger charges touted for bigger things in the games based on current form at club level.
Though he only joined Chicago Fire in December 2025, Mbokazi quickly became one of Chicago Fire’s most important players in Major League Soccer. As a result of his outstanding performances, he was named a 2026 MLS all-star alongside the likes of Thomas Muller and Son Heung-Min.

An impressive showing at the 2026 World Cup combined with his good performances for Chicago means there are bound to be plenty of eyes on the 21-year-old. Based on his current level of displays, it’s hard to see ‘TLB’ staying with the Fire until the end of his contract in 2030.
Since moving to Rangers in Scotland ahead of this season, Makhanya has turned plenty of heads. Barring a major loss of form, it is also hard to see him staying with the Gers for the long-term. According to Football Insider, English Premier League sides Bournemouth and Sunderland are keeping tabs on the former Stellenbosch FC player. Now one of the first names on the Rangers team sheet, Makhanya will be hoping to help his club land a first Scottish Premiership title since 2021 this season.
However, the prospect of playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues is likely to prove to be too good for him to turn down going forward.
The former Orlando Pirates winger has quickly established himself as an important player for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, whom he joined prior to the start of this season. Since arriving at the modest Belgian club, Mofokeng has so far contributed four goals and two assists in 12 appearances across all competitions. He is a fast learner as he is proving by quickly adapting to the demands of European football.
At this rate, he is likely to progress to bigger and better things.
