Mere: Sundowns Must End Domestic Cup Drought and Honour Fallen Adams

Vuyo Mere, who turned out for Mamelodi Sundowns and TS Galaxy during his playing days, is tipping the Brazilians to go all the way in this year’s MTN8. His belief is rooted in more than just football: four years without a domestic trophy and the memory of the late Jayden Adams make this campaign deeply personal.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s second leg against Lamontville Golden Arrows, where Sundowns trail 1-0 on aggregate, Mere made an emotional case for why the current squad will dig deep to overturn the deficit.

“It’s been a long, long, long time since they’ve won a domestic cup. So, you know, I think even for Jayden, man. I think they owe it to Jayden’s family. Grootman must get something this season.”
The club’s domestic cup drought has become an uncomfortable narrative for a team that dominates league football and continental competitions. Their last MTN8 triumph came over four years ago, an eternity for a club of Sundowns’ stature and resources.
But the reference to Adams adds emotional depth to what might otherwise be just another trophy pursuit.
The late midfielder’s passing has affected the entire South African football community, and Mere believes winning silverware would provide meaningful tribute to his memory and comfort to his family.
Sundowns face a challenging task on Sunday. Overturning a 1-0 deficit away to a Golden Arrows side that has already proven capable of frustrating them will require the kind of performance that transcends tactics and relies on sheer determination.
If Mere is correct, that determination will be fueled by something deeper than competitive pride.
