A 44-year-old man has been arrested for the alleged murder of his 37-year-old girlfriend.

According to police, the man went to the University of Limpopo campus, where the woman worked as a security guard, while she was on duty at around 8.40pm on Saturday.

He allegedly attacked her with a hammer, striking her on the head and leaving her seriously injured.
The man then attempted to drive away from the scene. However, students who witnessed the incident gave chase.

Police say he abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. The students managed to apprehend him and handed him over to police.

The woman was rushed to Mankweng Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The man now faces a murder charge.

Police say the motive remains unknown, although domestic violence cannot be ruled out as investigations continue.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Jan Scheepers has urged the public to report incidents of domestic violence before they escalate into violence.
