Just in: Top ANC Mayor In trouble
The fine was recently voted on by the council during a closed-door meeting.
Opposition parties have called it a slap on the wrist for the ANC councillor.
Last year, a forensic report commissioned by the municipality found Modise violated the code of conduct for councillors by not declaring his interest in Triotic Protection Services, which currently has a multimillion-rand security tender with the municipality.
Prior to becoming a councillor for the ANC in Tshwane, Modise owned the company.
The forensic report found the company is located in a property owned by Modise, and he derives a monthly rental income from it, something he also failed to disclose.
Following the release of the report in September last year, the council voted to form a multi-party ad-hoc committee, which was tasked with deliberating the appropriate sanction for Modise.
However, at a meeting behind closed doors, a report was tabled to disband the committee and issue a monetary fine to Modise.
EWN understands the ANC-ActionSA-EFF coalition used its majority in council to vote in favour of the report and recommended that Modise be fined two months’ worth of wages.
