Julius Malema’s EFF surges to 27% in unexpected municipality, claims latest poll

A new Ipsos poll has revealed a significant surge in support for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, with the party now polling at 27% ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

The study, which was conducted between March and April with 3,600 respondents, indicates a shifting political landscape in the Eastern Cape. While the African National Congress (ANC) continues to lead with 38% support, the EFF’s rise to 27% marks a notable increase in the party’s influence within the region.

The poll also highlighted that trust in the ANC has seen a shift, though the party remains the frontrunner in the metro. The findings suggest that the upcoming elections on 4 November 2026 could be highly competitive, with the EFF positioning itself as a major challenger in the municipality.
