Julius Malema rejects calls to scrap IDAC, South Africans divided by EFF leader’s reasoning
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has firmly rejected calls from various political factions to disestablish the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), sparking a heated debate across South Africa regarding the agency’s future and its oversight mechanisms.
We completely disagree with that approach. There’s nothing wrong with IDAC. IDAC was behaving in the manner it was behaving because there was no structure playing oversight over that structure.
While some political parties, including the MK Party, have argued that the conduct of IDAC officials demonstrates an abuse of power that warrants the agency’s dissolution, Malema maintains that the introduction of judicial oversight has effectively addressed previous concerns. The EFF leader’s stance has divided public opinion, with critics questioning the efficacy of the current oversight model, while supporters view his position as a necessary defense of anti-corruption institutions.
The ongoing deliberations within the ad hoc committee continue to highlight deep-seated disagreements over how the country’s law enforcement and criminal justice systems should be structured to ensure accountability without overstepping legal boundaries.
