Joburg’s coalition of the unwilling: five leaders on one broken city
Tempers flared as leaders of the ANC, DA, EFF, IFP and ActionSA clashed over service delivery, housing and immigration in a fiery debate regarding the future of Johannesburg. The city, which has been hit hard by unemployment, immigration issues, poor infrastructure, rising levels of violent crime and vandalism, and a lack of service delivery, served as the backdrop for the intense exchange.
The debate ended with the parties presenting competing visions of what Johannesburg requires after years of coalition instability.
The leaders sparred over corruption and the viability of coalition governance, with each party attempting to distinguish its platform from the others as they vie for control of the metropolitan municipality.
