From Pirates Cup To Bucs: Youngster Follows In Mofokeng’s Footsteps
Orlando Pirates youngster Moeketsi Koalepe has taken another step in his fledgling career at the Soweto giants after being handed a starting berth for the reserve team during their Winners Tour in the Netherlands.
The 21-year-old goalkeeper was named in the Orlando Pirates Reserve Team’s starting XI for their clash against Vitesse in Amsterdam on Tuesday, as the DStv Diski Challenge champions continue their Winners Tour in the Netherlands.
The tour, which runs from August 14 to 23, was organised following Pirates Reserves’ success in the DStv Diski Challenge last season.
Koalepe’s inclusion provides another glimpse into the club’s plans for the goalkeeper, who only recently joined the Soweto giants from FC Leapers.
The former TS Galaxy academy player earned his move to Pirates after an outstanding campaign with Leapers, where he was named both Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Player of the Tournament after helping the club lift the 2026 Pirates Cup.
His arrival also represents a significant opportunity for the young goalkeeper to follow a pathway that has previously produced one of Pirates’ most exciting talents.
Koalepe is following in the footsteps of Relebohile Mofokeng, another School of Excellence product who made his breakthrough at the Pirates Cup before earning an opportunity with the Buccaneers.
Mofokeng was named Player of the Tournament at the 2022 Pirates Cup before subsequently linking up with the Soweto giants and establishing himself as one of the club’s standout young players.
Koalepe will now look to carve out his own path at Pirates, having been brought in to strengthen the reserve team setup.
His arrival also comes after Bayanda Zulu was loaned out to Motsepe Foundation Championship side Midlands Wanderers, making Koalepe a direct replacement in the reserve-team squad.
The goalkeeper’s opportunity on the Netherlands tour is another important step as he looks to gain experience in the Pirates environment and stake his claim for a bigger role in the future.
With the Buccaneers continuing to emphasise developing young talent, Koalepe will be hoping his performances on the Winners Tour can be the beginning of another promising journey from the Pirates’ development structures to the first team.
