For families still waiting for answers about their loved one who’s gone missing, women who fear to walk home after dark, and survivors whose cases have stalled, President Cyril Ramaphosa has put government departments on the clock.

The plan will involve a coordinated fact-finding mission including a full count of the backlog related to GBVF cases countrywide.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has outlined a multi-disciplinary national strategy to address the growing scourge of Gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in the country. He has confirmed several arrests in the string of murder cases in Ekurhuleni recently, adding there is no indication that one person committed them.

In his address to the nation, Ramaphosa announced a four-point plan to tackle GBVF. He directed every municipality to immediately begin a women’s safety audit. Within 60 days, the audits must identify broken streetlights, overgrown public spaces and abandoned buildings that place women at risk.
