Ex-senior traffic official handed six-year jail term
A former traffic senior superintendent has been sentenced to six years’ imprisonment for corruption.
Elvis Nontyi was sentenced in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Friday after pleading guilty to six counts of corruption.
The Hawks said the former officer was based at Stellenbosch Municipality at the Driver’s Licence and Testing Centre.
Spokesperson Siyabulela Vukubi said Nontyi had access to the National Traffic Information System and accepted bribes from applicants.
“Between 17 March and 19 July 2022, the accused issued learner’s and/or driver’s licences to applicants in exchange for money, which was paid in cash to him by the applicants for a total amount of R5,550,” said Vukubi.
