The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have responded to the announcement that their leader, Julius Malema, is set to face criminal prosecution for crimen injuria. The case, which stems from allegations made by Malema against an Eastern Cape school principal, has been brought to the fore by AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit.

The EFF has characterized the move as a politically motivated attempt to silence their leader. In a statement, the party expressed its defiance, stating:

The EFF will not be intimidated by the antics of AfriForum, an organization that continues to use the legal system to pursue its narrow, reactionary agenda against the leadership of the revolution.

AfriForum, however, maintains that the prosecution is a necessary step to hold public figures accountable for their words. The organization’s private prosecution unit successfully convinced the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) that there were sufficient grounds to proceed with the charges after Malema publicly labeled a school principal a “rapist” despite the lack of evidence to support such a claim.

The legal battle highlights the ongoing tension between the EFF and AfriForum, with both sides preparing for a high-profile court appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
