The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have responded to the announcement that their leader, Julius Malema, is set to face prosecution for crimen injuria following a campaign by AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit.

The charges stem from remarks made by Malema regarding an Eastern Cape school principal, whom he publicly accused of rape. AfriForum successfully convinced the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to proceed with the case after submitting representations on behalf of the complainant.

The EFF maintains that this is a politically motivated attempt to silence their leader and distract from the real issues facing the country.

The party has vowed to defend Malema in court, arguing that the prosecution is part of a broader strategy by lobby groups to use the legal system to target political opponents. The case is expected to be heard in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
