The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have responded to the news that their leader, Julius Malema, is set to face prosecution for crimen injuria following a private prosecution initiative by AfriForum.

The case stems from remarks made by Malema regarding an Eastern Cape school principal, whom he publicly accused of rape. AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit successfully lobbied the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to pursue the charges after the organization argued that the accusations were false and defamatory.

The EFF and Malema know exactly what the court order stipulates and have spent years unsuccessfully trying to overturn it. They are now wilfully ignoring the order, and AfriForum will ensure that they face the consequences of their actions.

In response, the EFF has dismissed the legal action as a politically motivated campaign by AfriForum to silence the party and its leadership. The party maintains that Malema’s comments were made in the context of political advocacy and that the legal system is being weaponized against them.

The matter is expected to proceed to the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court, where the charges of crimen injuria will be formally addressed.
