The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have come out in strong defence of their leader, Julius Malema, as he faces impending criminal prosecution for crimen injuria. The case, brought forward by AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, stems from allegations made by Malema against an Eastern Cape school principal, whom he publicly accused of rape.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has reportedly accepted representations from AfriForum, clearing the way for the prosecution to proceed. Crimen injuria, under South African common law, is defined as the act of unlawfully, intentionally, and seriously impairing the dignity of another person.

The EFF maintains that the prosecution is a politically motivated attempt to silence their leader and undermine the party’s efforts to hold those in positions of power accountable.

AfriForum, however, argues that the legal action is necessary to address what they describe as reckless and defamatory conduct. The lobby group has been a persistent adversary of Malema, having been involved in several high-profile legal battles against him in recent years.

As the legal process unfolds, the EFF has vowed to support Malema, framing the case as part of a broader campaign by established interests to target the party’s leadership. The outcome of this trial is expected to be closely watched, given the high-profile nature of the parties involved and the ongoing tensions between the EFF and AfriForum.
