EFF and Ngizwe Mchunu supporters clash in Inanda

A violent confrontation between EFF supporters and followers of media personality Ngizwe Mchunu erupted in Inanda, north of Durban, on Friday, leaving both camps accusing each other of provocation and assault ahead of rival events scheduled for Saturday.

The rivalry between Ngizwe Mchunu and supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) was revived on Friday when the two sides exchanged blows and expletives, while gunshots were fired in Inanda, forcing police to intervene and restore order. The chaos started in the afternoon when Mchunu and his bodyguards returned from a venue inspection.

Festival organiser Ngizwe Mchunu says a member of his security team fired an AK-47 assault rifle into the air after noticing firearms among an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) group in Inanda, north of Durban. Mchunu says they were inspecting the venue where he will host a music event on Saturday when they were confronted by a group of EFF supporters.

The Economic Freedom Fighters have since opened a criminal case against Ngizwe Mchunu, claiming that he and his supporters shot at innocent party members in Inanda.

This Saturday, a strong police contingent has been deployed amid the latest flaring of clashes as the two sides proceed with their events. Earlier this morning, Ngizwe Mchunu denied that his event was organized to deliberately disrupt the EFF’s manifesto launch. He insists his event is going ahead, saying both sides need to respect each other to avoid any further escalation.
