Dramatic Scenes Unfold as Medics and Firefighters Spend Two Hours Freeing Driver Trapped in N3 Wreckage
At around 10pm last night, Mi7 Emergency Medical Services received reports of a serious truck collision on the N3 near the Market Road offramp in Pietermaritzburg.
On arrival, paramedics found that a truck carrying solid steel beams had collided with another truck. The force of the impact sent the heavy beams through the cab, leaving the driver trapped inside the wreckage with serious injuries.
A difficult rescue operation immediately began, with Mi7 Advanced Life Support and Rescue paramedics working alongside Pietermaritzburg firefighters to free the driver.
The complexity of the wreckage meant the extrication would ultimately take approximately two hours. During the rescue, the driver's condition deteriorated as a result of significant blood loss and paramedics were required to perform resuscitation efforts while he was still trapped.
Despite the difficult conditions, rescue teams continued working until the driver was successfully freed from the wreckage.
