Downs standing between Pirates equalling Chiefs’ record

Orlando Pirates will be chasing Kaizer Chiefs’ long-standing record as the most successful club in the MTN8 since its inception in the early 1970s when they go head-to-head with Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.
Pirates winning four consecutive MTN8 titles has catapulted them into the status of cup kings of the 2020s era and after reaching a fifth straight final, they now have a chance of re-writing the history books.
Chiefs have long been the most successful team in the MTN8, with a record 15 titles since their first triumph in 1974 while the competition was known as BP Top 8. However, Amakhosi not lifting the top eight cup since the 2014/15 season under former coach Stuart Baxter has seen The Buccaneers close the gap significantly.
Ezimnyama have won five of the past six editions of the MTN8, as they became the only side to have won the competition four times in a row after defeating Stellenbosch in last season’s final.
Following last campaign’s triumph, Pirates took their tally of MTN8 titles to 14, one short of equalling the record held by Amakhosi, since winning the tournament (known then as BP Top 8) back-to-back in 1972 and 1973.
After last winning the MTN8 for two consecutive seasons in 2010 and 2011 during their double treble era, The Buccaneers went through nine years of not lifting this particular cup before clinching it again in 2020 and since then, The Ghosts have not won the top eight cup only once, when it was on by Sundowns in 2021.
Chiefs, meanwhile, have been undone by back-to-back seasons of finishing outside of the top eight and therefore not qualifying for two straight years before they returned in the 2026/27 campaign.
However, The Glamour Boys were knocked out in the first round after a narrow 1-0 loss to Golden Arrows.
The Brazilians have won the MTN8 only four times through its various guises in their history.
