The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced that it will vote against the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) motion of no confidence in National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, despite having previously criticised her handling of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s impeachment proceedings.

The EFF’s motion, tabled by party leader Julius Malema in June, centres largely on Didiza’s decision not to oppose Ramaphosa’s urgent high court application to interdict the parliamentary impeachment process.

The DA has announced that it will vote against the EFF’s motion of no confidence in National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza because her removal would be “premature.”

With both the ANC and DA set to vote against the motion, the EFF’s bid to remove Didiza is unlikely to succeed. The two largest government of national unity (GNU) parties hold a 61.5 percent majority in Parliament, which means the EFF is unlikely to win the simple majority required to remove her from office.
