President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the killing and abuse of women in South Africa as “inhuman”, saying the country must do more to prevent violence against women and bring those responsible to justice.

Women change their routes home, avoid going out at night and warn one another about dangerous places and dangerous men. We have placed the burden of male violence on women.

His remarks came as the investigation into a series of women’s deaths in Gauteng was elevated to the highest level of national law enforcement coordination. The President said every victim represented a daughter, mother, sister or friend.

Ramaphosa called on men to lead the fight against gender-based violence, noting that most women who experience such violence know their attackers. He confirmed that police have identified persons of interest and collected forensic material, clothing and cellphone records, promising that cases will not be allowed to go cold.
