Cyril Ramaphosa breaks silence on General Fannie Masemola: SA questions his continued suspension
President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially addressed the status of National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola following his recent court appearance. In a formal statement, the President emphasized the necessity for law enforcement agencies to remain capable, ethical, and effective to maintain public trust.
For this fight to be successful, it is vital that our law enforcement agencies are capable, ethical and effective. It is vital that they have the confidence and the trust of the South African people.
The President confirmed that, in light of the serious charges brought against General Masemola regarding the contravention of the Public Finance Management Act, he has reached an agreement with the Commissioner for him to be placed on precautionary suspension. This measure will remain in effect pending the conclusion of the ongoing legal proceedings.
The decision follows Masemola’s appearance in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, where he faced charges related to a R228 million police health services tender. While the investigation continues, the government has moved to appoint Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane as the acting national police commissioner to ensure the stability and integrity of the service during this period.
