President Cyril Ramaphosa has addressed the ongoing situation surrounding National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, whose precautionary suspension has become a focal point of political and public debate. The President’s remarks come as various stakeholders, including the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, have begun to demand the immediate reinstatement of the police chief.

The continued suspension of General Masemola is an injustice to him, an insult to the Saps and a reckless obstruction of stable police leadership while women are being murdered in Ekurhuleni and elsewhere.

General Masemola was placed on precautionary suspension in April 2026 following his court appearance on charges related to the contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). The charges stem from his alleged role in the irregular awarding of a R360 million contract to Medicare24, a company linked to Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala.

While the Presidency initially maintained that the suspension was necessary due to the seriousness of the allegations and the critical nature of the Commissioner’s role, the political landscape has shifted. Critics argue that the legal proceedings have stalled or collapsed, leading to calls for the President to fulfill his constitutional duty and restore Masemola to office without further delay.

The debate highlights the tension between maintaining the integrity of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and ensuring stable leadership during a period of high crime rates. As the legal process continues, the question of whether the suspension remains justified or has become an impediment to effective policing remains a contentious issue in South African politics.
