Cape Town Spurs CEO Alex Efstathiou has raised his voice in reaction to the progress of youngster Luke Baartman at Kaizer Chiefs as he scored his first goal of the season in the win over Sekhukhune United.
Chiefs emerged on the winning side with a 2-0 scoreline in a Betway Premiership match against Sekhukhune at FNB Stadium on Wednesday, where Baartman netted his first ever strike for South Africa’s most-supported side since joining last season.
Efstathiou, whose club developed the lad nicknamed ‘Boere’ from the junior ranks, believes Baartman has the potential to reach greater heights.
“It is not unexpected,” said Efstathiou in a telephonic conversation with KickOff.

He further explained that many young players do not achieve their full potential because teams do not provide enough opportunities. Spurs, adds Efstathiou, have been successful in developing talent because they persist with nurturing young players and believes in their capabilities.

“During his time in our juniors, he scored between 80 and 100 goals. Although I cannot recall the exact age group, he was consistently among the top goal-scorers each season.
“He joined our academy at nine through our scouting system. There was interest from international clubs some time ago. Once he gains more exposure through the national team, I believe he will transfer overseas to further his development.
“The sooner he makes such a move, the better for his growth,” Efstathiou concluded.
