Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has provided an update on Teboho Mokoena’s injury after the midfielder was forced off during their CAF Champions League encounter against Wiliete SC.
The Brazilians were held to a goalless draw by the Angolan side in the first leg of their second preliminary round tie on Sunday evening.
The Bafana Bafana international was unable to continue five minutes before half-time after picking up a knock and was replaced by Bathusi Aubaas.
Speaking after the match, Cardoso revealed that Mokoena had experienced discomfort around a ligament he injured while on national team duty, although the extent of the latest setback was still unknown.
“Obviously, the maturity of Teboho Mokoena is important to sustain the team. This team has also several young players,” Cardoso said, according to the club’s media.
“But yeah, Teboho, it’s a little bit of a touch on that ligament that was hurt on the national team.
Moreso, Cardoso confirmed that further examinations would be conducted to determine the severity of the injury.
“In the moment we don’t know the extension of the injury, but he could not continue in the match,” added the Portuguese tactician.
“So let’s hope it’s not a big thing and we can recover him for the next match. Tomorrow [Monday] he will be submitted to exams.”
Masandawana will host Wiliete in the second leg in Tshwane on Friday, with a place in the next round of the continental competition at stake.
The reigning champions will be hoping Mokoena’s injury is not serious as they look to finish the job at home after failing to find a breakthrough in Angola.
