Orlando Pirates leapfrogged rivals Kaizer Chiefs into top spot on the Betway Premiership table after defeating Chippa United 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Kings Park Stadium.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou was far from impressed with his players after Wednesday’s draw against AmaZulu, calling for a lot of the squad to wake up, as he made three changes for the clash with Oswin Appollis, Deon Hotto and Mokobodi called up to the starting line-up.

The Buccaneers were certainly on the front from the early stages as they went in search of an early goal, but they were unable to find a way past a Chippa side who were sitting deep in their own half, restricting the opposition to efforts from distance.

Chippa, meanwhile, showed no desire to come out of their defensive shell as the first half, although the pace of Justice Figareido did prove to be somewhat of a reliable option to relieve pressure as he managed to get beyond Kamogelo Sebelebele on a few occasions down the right side of Pirates’ defence.

The biggest moment of the half fell to a former Pirates player when Imraan Jones’ free-kick found its way to Goodman Mosele at the far post, but the midfielder sent his first-time volley well over the target from close-range.

After waves of attack, Pirates eventually got the breakthrough in 60 minutes when Ghampani Lungu collected a pass from Maswanganyi before rifling the ball beyond Stanley Nwabali for his second goal with the Soweto giants.

The Buccaneers made sure to get the two-goal cushion minutes later as defender Lebone Seema opened his account for the campaign by rising above his marker to head home a cross from Deon Hotto.

The two goals forced the Chilli Boys to come out of their shell if they hoped to get anything out of the contest, although that left them vulnerable to the Soweto giants’ counter-attack as a big win would see the champions overtake Kaizer Chiefs into top spot.

Chippa did go on to seal a third goal when substitute Daniel Msendami won the ball high up the pitch to go clear on goal and calmly slot past Nwabali to open his scoring account for the club, who will end the weekend top of the table.
