Broos reacts to Pitso appointment after ‘go back five years’ remark

Former Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has reacted to Pitso Mosimane’s appointment as the national team coach following his earlier controversial remarks.

Mosimane has officially taken over as the new Bafana head coach, succeeding Broos and beginning a new era that will include the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the 2027 AFCON and the road towards 2030.

When Mosimane was still only a candidate for the job, Broos was asked about the possibility of the former Bafana coach returning and his response was hardly an endorsement.

“Maybe so. You know, South Africa still doesn’t have a manager. The candidate is Pitso Mosimane, a successful South African coach,” Broos told Het Nieuwsblad.

“However, they know that if he comes, they will go back five years in time.”

Those words now carry considerably more weight following Mosimane’s confirmation as Broos’ successor.

Despite his earlier assessment, the 74-year-old tactician has now publicly welcomed the former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor into the job.

Broos has now offered his successor his best wishes, but his earlier claim remains hanging over the new Bafana era.

“President, congratulations to the new Bafana Bafana coach. I wish the coach and SAFA all the luck and success in the next few months,” Broos told SAFA.

The appointment means Mosimane no longer has to answer questions about whether he should get the job. His results will provide the response.

The three-time CAF Champions League winner returns to the Bafana dugout for a second stint after previously coaching the national team between 2010 and 2012.

He now faces the task of proving that his return will not take Bafana “back five years”, as Broos predicted, but instead move the national team forward.
