African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in eThekwini to bolster the party’s campaign in the city as it looks to regain lost ground from the Umkhonto Wesizwe party.

Ramaphosa will be spending two days in eThekwini, where he will be conducting door-to-door campaigning and chairing community hall meetings.

This is the president’s final visit to eThekwini ahead of the local government elections next month.

In the 2024 national and provincial elections, 48% of voters in eThekwini cast their ballots for the uMkhonto we Sizwe party.

If those same results are replicated in the upcoming local government elections, the ANC faces the possibility of losing its title as the biggest party in eThekwini since the turn of democracy.

The ANC’s eThekwini coordinator, Thanduxolo Sabelo, said he’s confident the voters will return to the party.

We are quite confident that we will regain most of the lost ground from 2024. The campaign we are driving in the regions suggests that we will get much support from the people.

Ramaphosa’s visit comes a few days after he deployed a contingent of soldiers to Durban to deal with the recent wave of violent anti-immigration protests.
