AmaZulu’s red-hot form: ‘Still too early to tell’

Former Bloemfontein Celtic coach Tony De Nobrega is not yet convinced by AmaZulu FC’s start in the current season.

Usuthu have enjoyed a phenomenal start to the 2026/2027 Betway Premiership season, sitting comfortably in 3rd place with 19 points from their opening eight matches.

Under head coach Arthur Zwane, Usuthu have recorded six wins, one draw, and just one defeat, positioning themselves as genuine contenders at the top of the table alongside South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

AmaZulu kicked off their league campaign with an impressive 1-0 away victory against Stellenbosch FC, followed by a hard-fought 1-1 draw against heavyweights Orlando Pirates. Though they suffered a temporary speed bump in a high-scoring 5-2 defeat to defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Zwane’s men responded perfectly, embarking on a four-game winning streak ahead of the October international window.

In their most recent outing on 13 October, they secured bragging rights in a tense Durban derby, beating Durban City FC 2-1 with first-half goals from Mlondi Mbanjwa and Athini Maqokola.

Usuthu’s explosive form keeps them within touching distance of the summit, trailing league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by just four points with a game in hand.

“It’s still too early; only a few games have been played so far this season,” De Nobrega tells KickOff.

“AmaZulu have started well, but we will see in the second half of the season if they can maintain their good start. For now, it is too early to tell; the bigger teams they always come out on top in the end. I’m sure it’s going to be the same this season.”
