Aden McCarthy soaks in the Theatre of Dreams
Sep 10, 2026 – 12:27 pm
By Lukhanyo Mtuta
South African star Aden McCarthy is taking it all in at one of the world’s most iconic grounds, Old Trafford, ahead of a UEFA Champions League clash against Manchester United.
McCarthy could make his Champions League debut against Man Utd this evening, as Sabah will play their first-ever match in the tournament following their historic qualification.
McCarthy played a fringe role in the qualifying rounds of the tournament but will still be hoping to make an appearance against the Red Devils on Thursday night — a fixture that represents the pinnacle of what has already been an extraordinary debut campaign abroad for the 22-year-old.
Notably, the last South African player to play at the Theatre of Dreams was Lyle Foster, who scored for Burnley during a 3-2 defeat in August 2025.
McCarthy will now be hoping to create his own piece of history at the famous ground, whether from the field or on the sidelines.

McCarthy looks to be enjoying a remarkable first season abroad, travelling to face a number of iconic clubs in the Champions League league phase, including FC Barcelona, Napoli and Borussia Dortmund — a far cry from his days at Naturena.
Last week, the former Amakhosi centre-back featured in the official Champions League portrait photoshoot, and over the last 24 hours he has been getting a feel for the Old Trafford pitch. On Thursday night, he will feel the full atmosphere of the ground — a moment that will surely rank among the highlights of his fledgling European career.
