One motorist killed, 12 SAPS members injured in a head-on collision, Polokwane

One motorist was killed and 12 South African Police Service (SAPS) members were injured in a horrific head-on collision along the N1 freeway near the Astron Filling Station on Friday night, 28 August 2026.

According to SAPS, the collision occurred at approximately 19:00 when a sedan travelling northbound on the N1 allegedly veered out of its lane and collided with a police minibus.

The impact caused the sedan to catch fire.

Motorists at the scene, together with emergency services, responded swiftly to the incident. The blaze was extinguished, while the injured SAPS members were rescued from the police vehicle and transported to various medical facilities across the province for treatment.

The motorist in the sedan was declared dead at the scene. His identity had not yet been confirmed at the time of reporting.
