Cassius Mailula is proving that home is really where the heart is, and a return to familiar territory is slowly awakening the beast in him.
After a difficult few years abroad, Mailula has returned to Mamelodi Sundowns and has already come to the club’s rescue in two of the three matches they have played in all competitions.
In their MTN8 clash against Polokwane City last weekend, the man popularly known as ‘Cash’ bagged the winner on his second debut for the Tshwane giants, sending Sundowns into the semi-finals where they will face Golden Arrows. Against Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership at FNB Stadium yesterday, Mailula scored the goal which earned Sundowns an away point in a 1-1 draw.
On both occasions, Mailula came off the bench to score, and this is probably just a glimpse of what’s to come from the striker, and a warning to PSL defenders who may have forgotten how deadly he was for Sundowns before leaving for Canadian side Toronto FC in 2023.
At the time, Mailula had just won the Betway Premiership young player of the year and it seemed the next best thing for his career was to test himself abroad. The MLS (Major League Soccer) was a league some of South Africa’s young players were starting to move to and it seemed to be a good move for him.
Things, however, just did not work out at all for the striker, who had loans spells at Wydad Casablanca in Morocco and Kortrijk in Belgium.
Following the departure of Peter Shalulile at Sundowns, Mailula is proving to be the perfect man head coach Miguel Cardoso can call on, especially now that Iqraam Rayners has not been in the best. Mailula and Brayan Leon could turn out to be the main men for Sundowns upfront this season as they make a bid to reclaim their Premiership title and defend the CAF Champions League trophy.
