Calcutta, a township in the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, has recorded another deadly weekend, with four suspects arrested after a man was attacked and shot dead in Somerset Trust in the early hours of Saturday morning (August 8).
Four suspects, aged between 26 and 33, were arrested after the incident at about 00:20 in Somerset Trust, reports Lowvelder.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo, Calcutta SAPS received a report that a man had been assaulted by community members and taken to Matikwana Hospital in Mkhuhlu.
Police were dispatched to the hospital, where officers were directed to the lifeless body of a man lying on a bed. Masondo confirmed that the deceased had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigations into the killing led to the arrest of the four suspects. They are expected to appear in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court today (August 11).
“More suspects may be arrested pending further investigations,” Masondo said.
Community members, who asked not to be named for fear of retaliation, said that the incident happened at Maqhwalibavhu Tavern.
The latest killing brings the number of gun murders in the Calcutta policing precinct to 39 since the beginning of the year.
