There’s a part of Lungelo Dondolo that feels ready to play for Orlando Pirates and fight for a spot in the team, but he believes his latest loan move will fully prepare him for the topflight.
Born in Katlehong, the player popularly known as ‘Scirocco’ has been loaned out to Real Native FC (formerly Casric Stars) in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, his second loan move since becoming part of the Pirates family.
The 25-year-old was on loan to Championship side Midlands Wanderers for the second half of last season, not long after being part of the Pirates squad that played in the Carling All Stars match in December. Dondolo, who played more for the Pirates’ reserve side Pele Pele, was on the bench for the Buccaneers in the Carling All Stars match and was then loaned out to KZN side Wanderers.
At Wanderers, Dondolo played 13 matches, scored four goals and provided six assists, making his mark at the club. Now, he’s a Real Native player, on loan for the season, and he’s determined to learn from the experience as much as possible.
“Honestly, as a player I’d say I am ready because that’s where I want to see myself, but when you look at things sometimes, you think I still maybe need a good season or in the NFD to prepare myself, so when I go there to the Betway Premiership, I am not coming back to the NFD,” Dondolo said to Soccer Laduma, after being unveiled by Real Native.
“Going out on loan helps you as a player because sometimes you tell yourself that you are ready to play for your parent club, but they see something that you do not see and it helps a lot because we improve certain things you think you knew. When you play those NFD games, you learn a lot. It prepares me for the Betway Premiership as I wait for my team. It gives me confidence. Each game, I learn something new.”
Real Native announced 16 new players ahead of the new campaign, including Vicky Mkhawana and Ofentse Kgosana, who are both on loan from Kaizer Chiefs. Experienced players Menzi Ndwandwe and Xolani Slawula have also joined the club.
The club, meanwhile, have let go of former Pirates defender Justice Chabalala, as confirmed to by coach Bucs Mthombeni. He joined the club, as Casric, during the second half of last season, signing a deal until the end of June.
