Furious Ouaddou: ‘We can’t let people say Pirates is just a name!’

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained his frustration with his squad following a 3-0 win over Milford FC in the Last 16 of the Carling Knockout.

The Buccaneers kicked off the defence of their Carling Knockout title with an emphatic 3-0 beating of newly promoted Milford FC.

The match was played at Orlando Amstel Arena and, to many’s surprise, the Moroccan-Frenchman was displeased with his side’s squandered chances despite the 3-0 win.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Ouaddou slammed his squad’s ‘selfishness’ and called for more efficiency in front of the box.

“If we have to put eight goals against Milford, we have to show Milford that we are not playing at the same level,” Ouaddou said, although he admitted having high respect for the KZN side and its head coach Dr Xanti Pupuma.

“I don’t want to let people think that Pirates is only a name. We cannot say that. We can’t let people say that,”

“So, it’s why I’m angry. When we wear this shirt with this badge of Pirates, you need to transform yourself in every game. I’m not here to nurse anybody. I don’t have time.”

The Sea Robbers have been drawn against Sekhukhune United in the last 8 of the Carling Knockout, with a date and time yet to be confirmed.

In the meantime, Pirates turn their immediate attention to a mammoth Soweto Derby clash against rivals Kaizer Chiefs. The match will be played at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
