African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula says the party’s abstention from voting for Advocate Thandazani Madonsela SC as the evidence leader of the Impeachment Committee does not constitute an objection.

In a letter to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, Mbalula disclosed that Madonsela was briefed previously to provide legal advice to the ANC on matters relating to Section 89 parliamentary rules and processes. The PA and Al Jamah also abstained from voting.

“The ANC states that the disclosure does not constitute an objection to the committee’s decision, nor does it question the integrity or independence of Adv Madonsela SC, but is intended to place the information formally on record before the process is concluded. The matters raised relate directly to the deliberations and decisions of the committee and, therefore, properly fall within the committee’s processes,” says Parliament Spokesperson Moloto Mothapo.
