N12 reopens after protest near Lenasia, but motorists warned of congestion
The N12 freeway near Lenasia and Nana’s Farm is in the process of being reopened after protest action, with motorists warned to expect heavy congestion on connecting roads as traffic backlogs clear.
Johannesburg metropolitan police department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla said protesting crowds had dispersed and law enforcement officers were working to secure and reopen the freeway in both directions between K43 and Abubakar Asvat Drive.
Progress has been made in stabilising the area and restoring traffic movement.
Officers had also begun clearing rocks, debris and burnt obstructions from K43, also known as Klipspruit Valley Road, and Abubakar Asvat Drive.
Traffic was flowing slowly along both roads, according to the department.
Public order policing units, together with JMPD and South African Police Service members, were in the final stages.
Although traffic movement was gradually being restored, Fihla said it would take time to completely clear residual backlogs.
Motorists were urged to be vigilant and allow for additional travel time when using roads in the affected areas.
