More than 100 undocumented migrants have been arrested during police’s “Operation Shanela” in the mining communities at Apel and Mecklenburg outside Burgersfort in Limpopo.
The migrants will be verified and processed by the law enforcement agencies before being deported. Police also say that they have arrested 26 wanted suspects during the same operation.
Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says the operation targeted illegal immigration, illegal mining, wanted suspects and other criminals. “Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers commended the multidisciplinary teams for the successes achieved and reaffirmed the province’s commitment to sustained high-density operations. He reiterated that SAPS will hit hard on criminals and squeeze every space. He concluded by reassuring that our communities must be safe at all times. The arrested suspects are expected to appear before the respective courts where applicable.”
