Rangers FC’s signing of Olwethu Makhanya is increasingly looking like a shrewd piece of business, with the South African defender’s reported market value now four times the amount the club paid to secure his services.

The Scottish giants are understood to have spent just €3.5 million (around R64 million) to secure the player’s services from Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union.

Since then, he has made his mark, becoming an important member of the starting eleven at the heart of the Gers’ defence.

Just recently, it was reported that Premier League outfits Brentford and Sunderland were in the stands specifically to observe the Bafana Bafana star during his side’s 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock on Saturday — their fifth victory on the bounce.

However, according to data and analysis organisation CIES Football Observatory, who released a report that included the defender, Makhanya has been handed a valuation representing more than a fourfold increase on the fee Rangers paid to bring him to Glasgow.

The report valued the centre-back at €14.3 million (around R263 million), suggesting that the Scottish outfit’s decision to pursue the defender could very well result in a substantial profit should they ultimately be unable to hold on to the player.

With his contract keeping him in Glasgow until 2030, the Gers are understood to have no intention of parting with the Bafana Bafana star, who was recently named the club’s Player of the Month for September.

Meanwhile, in earlier benchmark research by the CIES Football Observatory, Makhanya was featured among the top young talents globally, further underlining the wisdom of the Light Blues’ investment and the growing regard in which the 22-year-old is held across Europe.
