The Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, also known as the Madlanga Commission, continues to probe allegations of corruption and criminal infiltration within South Africa’s law enforcement agencies.
Established by President Cyril Ramaphosa following serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July 2025, the commission has been tasked with investigating systemic issues across various departments, including the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD), and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD).
The commission has heard testimony regarding the infiltration of the JMPD by criminal networks and collusion between JMPD officers and criminal syndicates.
Throughout its tenure, the commission has examined a wide range of evidence, from unexplained wealth among high-ranking officials to the manipulation of correctional services by inmates. The inquiry has also navigated complex legal challenges, including applications for in-camera testimony to protect sensitive witnesses involved in covert operations and drug seizure investigations.
As the commission works toward its final report, now due on 25 January 2027, it continues to process testimony from experts and officials aimed at addressing the integrity of the criminal justice system.
