President Cyril Ramaphosa has used his national address on gender-based violence (GBV) to call on South African men to take a stand against the scourge, specifically praising national sports icons Siya Kolisi and Temba Bavuma for their leadership in this area.

The President highlighted that figures like Siya Kolisi and Temba Bavuma have been instrumental in using their platforms to speak out against the abuse of women and children, setting a powerful example for men and boys across the country.

Ramaphosa emphasized that the fight against GBV cannot be won by government alone and requires a fundamental shift in societal attitudes, particularly among men. He urged citizens to move beyond silence and actively challenge the behaviors that perpetuate violence.

We need more men to follow the example of leaders like Siya and Temba, who have shown that true strength lies in respect, protection, and the rejection of violence against women.

The address also touched upon the government’s commitment to strengthening the criminal justice system, ensuring that cases of gender-based violence are prioritized and that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
