Chiefs fans slammed: You are crushing the boy!

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka has made a plea to supporters following revelations made by Amakhosi star Mduduzi Shabalala on SuperSport’s Giants show, where the rising star spoke on the effects of toxic fan abuse.
Maluleka urged the football community to consider the human element, stating that constantly crushing the 22-year-old playmaker makes it impossible for him to perform every weekend.
Shabalala has frequently found himself on the receiving end of heavy abuse from Amakhosi supporters whenever results go south, carrying a massive psychological burden for such a young player at a prominent club.
Despite the ongoing criticism, data shows that “Mdu or Die” remains one of the Glamour Boys’ most productive assets over the last two seasons.
During the 2025/26 Premier Soccer League campaign, Shabalala was highly influential, registering 5 goals and 3 assists across 26 domestic appearances (according to Transfermarkt) while creating 37 key passes.
His creative numbers and direct goal contributions consistently place him among the top performers in the current squad, proving his undisputed value to the team’s offensive transition.
Reviewing the segment of the show on SuperSportTV, Maluleka – who is no stranger to fan abuse – said there should be limits to banter towards young players.
“Very touching, you know? But I think something that we need to touch on is that he is still very young. And he plays for a very big club, Kaizer Chiefs.”
“You can banter and banter and crush the boy, but he still needs to go on the field and play.”
“If you’re crushing the boy, how do you expect him to go each and every weekend and play?”
“There’s a human element. Let us think about that side of it.”
Kaizer Chiefs will desperately need Shabalala to find his top form when they return to competitive action.
The Naturena-based outfit is scheduled to face Stellenbosch FC in a crucial Betway Premiership clash at the FNB Stadium, a fixture that was recently advanced to 13 October 2026 at 19:30 to accommodate upcoming CAF Confederation Cup commitments.
