Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has voiced his opposition to calls for the dissolution of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (Idac), asserting that the unit remains a necessary institution despite recent controversies.

Malema’s comments come amid growing political pressure from various parties, including the MK Party and the DA, which have questioned the directorate’s mandate and operational integrity following testimony at the Madlanga Commission.

There is nothing wrong with Idac as an institution; the problem lies with the individuals who have been tasked with leading it and how they have handled specific investigations.

The EFF leader argued that dismantling the unit would be a regressive step in the fight against corruption in South Africa. He suggested that instead of abolishing the body, focus should be placed on ensuring that its leadership is held accountable and that its processes are transparent.

The debate surrounding Idac has intensified following the resignation of its former head, Andrea Johnson, and questions regarding the investigation into police Crime Intelligence Head, Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo. While some political factions have labeled the unit as “fatally tainted,” Malema maintains that the core function of the directorate is vital for the country’s governance.
