From broken streetlights to stalled cases: Ramaphosa outlines four GBV immediate measures
President Cyril Ramaphosa has outlined a multi-disciplinary national strategy to address the growing scourge of Gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in the country.
The plan will involve a coordinated fact-finding mission including a full count of the backlog related to GBVF cases countrywide.
He has confirmed several arrests in the string of murder cases in Ekurhuleni recently, adding there is no indication that one person committed them.
In his address to the nation on Tuesday, Ramaphosa announced a four-point plan to tackle GBVF. He directed every municipality to immediately begin a women’s safety audit. Within 60 days, the audits must identify broken streetlights, overgrown public spaces and abandoned buildings that place women at risk.
